October’s Spotlight is on Judy Blume

Judy Blume is a beloved American author known for her children’s and YA books like “Are you There, God? It’s Me Margaret”, “Blubber” and Double Fudge” (and my personal favorite- “Freckle Juice”). In the USA, Blume is one of the most frequently challenged authors of the 21st century because of her writing on subjects considered to be taboo, but despite those efforts, Blume’s books have sold over 82 million copies and have been translated into over 32 languages. Judy Blume has also written books for adults and has won many writing awards. Come check one of her books out at the library.

July’s Spotlight is on Marcus Pfister

Marcus Pfister was born (and still lives) in Bern, Switzerland. Published in 1992, his Rainbow Fish series of books have been translated into more than 80 languages (including English, lucky us!) and have sold over 15 million copies worldwide! Pfister uses watercolors to create his unique and beautiful book illustrations. Come check out one of his books at the library!

April’s Spotlight is on Beverly Cleary

Beverly Cleary is an American author best known for her books starring Henry Huggins and Beezus and Ramona Quimby. Before she was a writer, Cleary was a children’s librarian who made it her mission to help kids find books they loved to read. Her books have been published in over 25 different languages! Publisher Harper Collins celebrates April 12, Cleary’s birthday, as Drop Everything and Read day(DeaR). CEL owns many of Beverly Cleary’s books, come check one out today! (or maybe tomorrow (6th April) when CEL is next open!)

March Spotlight is on Dr. Seuss

Of course, we all know Dr. Seuss, beloved American author of books like “The Cat and the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham”, but March 2 is Dr. Seuss’s birthday, so in honor of him here are some Seussical fun facts:
– Dr. Seuss’ real name is Theodore Geisel
– He knows we’re all pronouncing his name wrong but thought it beneficial to sound similar to Mother Goose
– Before becoming a famous children’s author, he drew ads for companies like GE and NBC
-He won a special Pulitzer Prize in 1984 for “contribution over nearly half a century to the education and enjoyment of America’s children and their parents”.
Come check out one of his books at the library!

February’s Spotlight is on Dinosaurs

What’s your favorite dinosaur? We have lots of dinosaur books here, both fiction and non-fiction. If you want to learn about dinosaurs, try “The Best-Ever Book of Dinosaurs” held in the 560s in non-fiction. If you want a story featuring dinosaurs, try “I’m Tryannosaurus”, in the picture books. Maybe you want to draw dinosaurs? Try “Draw 50 Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals” in the 760s, or maybe you’d like to do the Dinosaur Jigsaw Puzzle. There’s really something for every dinosaur lover, and every dinosaur lover to be. Come check one out at the library!

November’s Spotlight is on Astrid Lindgren

Astrid Lindgren is a Swedish author best known for her children’s series featuring Pippi Longstocking. She is the world’s most translated author and the fourth most translated children’s author. She’s sold roughly 144 million books worldwide. Astrid has a literary prize named for her, which is awarded to a Swedish-language children’s writer every year on her birthday in November. Following her death, the Swedish government instituted the Astrid Lindgren Memorial award in her memory- it’s the largest monetary award for children’s and youth literature- 5 million Swedish kroner! As of 2015 Lindgren’s portrait is on the 20 kroner banknote, too!
